Size is where online scarf buyers get caught out: in the Liberty London reviews we read, the worst were small squares bought from photos (“it is actually a pocket handkerchief”). - **90 × 90 cm (35 in).** Folded along the diagonal it makes a band about 127 cm long, enough for every neck knot with room to spare, a headscarf that ties at the nape, a shoulder shawl or a top. It’s also the size that frames as a picture. - **70 × 70 cm (27.5 in).** The band is about 99 cm: a neat knot at the neck, a headband, a ponytail scarf. It won’t go round the shoulders or work as a top. - **Long, 65 × 180 cm.** For wrapping, draping over a dress or a coat, or wearing as a hijab. - **Pocket square, 42 × 42 cm.** A breast pocket or a bag handle. The band lengths come from our [guide to tying a silk square](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/how-to-tie-a-silk-square-scarf), which sets out which of 12 ties each size can do. ## How to judge a silk scarf before you buy it Three things separate a scarf that lasts from one that disappoints, and they’re the same three that reviewers check at every price. 1. **Weight.** Silk is sold by momme, a measure of weight per area. 18 momme is about 78 g per square metre. Aubrey Kurlansky’s 90 cm square weighs about 64 g (we weighed one) and his 65 × 180 cm long scarf about 92 g, which is what 18 momme over those areas comes to, plus the hems. Most printed squares that state a weight are 12 to 18 momme; ours are 18. “Thin and flimsy” was the commonest complaint in the Liberty London scarf reviews we read. Aubrey Kurlansky’s squares are printed on both sides, so they look right however they’re tied. 3. **The hem.** A hand-rolled hem is the edge rolled tight by hand and held with small stitches, so it stays soft and rounded; makers describe machine hems as flatter, usually with one line of stitching. Look for “hand-rolled” on the page, not just “hand-finished”. Check the label says 100% silk, not “silk feel”, satin or a blend. And check the care: every Aubrey Kurlansky piece is dry clean only. ## Order-by dates: Christmas 2026 to Mother’s Day 2027 Every piece is made to order and delivered in 2 to 3 weeks, so each date counts back 3 weeks.
