**A real silk scarf in the classic 90 cm square costs $50 to $650 on its maker’s own website.** We checked 51 of them, from 17 countries, on 17 October 2026, and half cost less than $246. For most buyers the best value is under $300: per square metre of silk, squares under $150 cost about a quarter as much as the fashion houses’ ($160 against $723), and the makers between $150 and $300 tell you more about what you’re buying than anyone else.

Price is a poor guide to what’s in the silk. None of the fashion-house squares we checked states its silk’s weight, and fewer than half say the hem is rolled by hand. The details that change how a scarf looks and lasts (the weight, the hem, whether it’s printed on both sides) are stated most often in the middle of the range. So below, each price tier comes with what its makers actually put in writing.

_The Kanso Collective sells Aubrey Kurlansky’s silk squares, which sit in the $150 to $299 tier; he is one of its co-founders. Every other price is from the maker’s own site, checked 17 October 2026._

## The short answer

| Tier | Squares | Median price | Median per m² | Examples from makers’ own sites |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under $150 | 13 | $125 | $160 | Quince $50, Lilysilk $79, Jessie Zhao $149 |
| $150 to $299 | 17 | $220 | $272 | Lost Pattern $160, Elizabetta $190, Silver & Riley $275 |
| $300 to $499 | 11 | $355 | $438 | Liberty London $340, Sabina Savage $415, Longchamp $425 |
| $500 and up | 10 | $585 | $723 | Louis Vuitton $530, Gucci $540, Dior $620, Loewe $650 |

All prices are for one square of about 90 cm (84 to 92 cm), in US dollars. Prices from non-US stores are converted at the European Central Bank’s rates of 16 October 2026; they’re home-market prices, not what a US buyer pays at checkout.

> Under $150, a square metre of silk costs about $160. From a fashion house, about $723.

## What each price tier actually tells you

Four facts tell you most of what a silk square is: its weight in [momme](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/silk-twill-momme-hand-rolled-hems#what-momme-means), whether the hem is rolled by hand, whether it’s printed on both sides, and where it’s made. Here’s how many squares in each tier state each one on the product page.

| Tier | States the weight | Hand-rolled hem | Printed both sides | Says where it’s made |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under $150 (13) | 1 | 6 | 2 | 5 |
| $150 to $299 (17) | 5 | 10 | 4 | 9 |
| $300 to $499 (11) | 0 | 7 | 0 | 7 |
| $500 and up (10) | 0 | 4 | 1 | 6 |

All six squares that state a weight cost under $300, and they range from 12 to 18 momme. Weight matters most [in winter](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/silk-scarves-for-winter#heavier-silk-or-chiffon), when heavier silk is warmer. One square of the 51 states all four facts, and it’s the one we sell, Aubrey Kurlansky’s; we’ve held it to the same rule as the others.

## Under $150: the cheapest real silk squares

The cheapest real 90 cm silk square we found is [Quince](https://www.quince.com/women/100-silk-printed-square-scarf)’s: $50 for 87.6 cm (34.5 in), “100% silk”, with a “Handrolled edge”, “Made with care in Hangzhou, China”. That’s $65 per square metre, the lowest in the dataset. [Lilysilk](https://www.lilysilk.com/us/product/lily-print-silk-scarf-91a6245.html) prints both sides of a 90 cm silk twill for $79, and [Jessie Zhao](https://jessiezhao.com/products/new-double-sided-silk-scarf-night-jungle-gathering)’s double-sided, hand-rolled 35-inch squares go up to $149.

What you give up at this price is information more than quality: only one square in this tier states its weight, and fewer than half say where they’re made. If a scarf under about $50 claims to be 90 cm of silk, check the label says 100% silk.

## $150 to $299: where the details show up

This is the tier where makers state the most. [Lost Pattern](https://lostpattern.com/products/pop-pony-silk-twill-large-square-scarf-burgundy) is $160, double-sided and hand-rolled; [Elizabetta](https://elizabetta.net/products/pink-botanical-print-silk-scarf) is $190, “printed, cut and sewn along the shores of Lake Como”; [Silver & Riley](https://silverandriley.com/products/silks-sunday-in-saint-germain-90) is $275 for “17.5 momme” Italian twill, hand-rolled in Como. [Aubrey Kurlansky](https://thekansocollective.com/aubrey-kurlansky)’s squares are from $219: 18 momme silk twill woven in China, printed on both sides, with hand-rolled hems. Each is a limited edition, never mass produced: made to order in collaboration with the artist and finished by hand.

## $300 to $499: heritage and studio makers

Here you pay for a house’s history or a studio’s artwork. [Liberty London](https://www.libertylondon.com/us/hera-90-x-90-silk-twill-scarf-437241.html)’s Hera square, from an 1887 design, is $340; [Sabina Savage](https://www.sabinasavage.com/products/chasing-the-pearl-silk-twill-90)’s illustrated squares, “designed, printed and manufactured in England”, are $415; Longchamp’s is $425. None of the 11 states its weight, but seven say hand-rolled and seven say where they’re made.

## $500 and up: what the fashion houses’ pages say

![A woman in a gold shirt and boater hat with a green silk square on the table in front of her](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/_astro/golden-knuckles-silk-square.D_q_qTYs_1s5zhs.webp)

Aubrey Kurlansky’s Golden Knuckles.

All ten squares over $500 are from fashion houses: Louis Vuitton $530, Gucci $540, Ferragamo $560, Etro $570, Chanel $575, Emilio Pucci $595, Delvaux $600, Dior and Cartier $620, Loewe $650. Their pages state the size and fabric, and four say hand-rolled (Louis Vuitton, Delvaux, Dior and Loewe). None states a weight, and one, Loewe, is a double-face twill with a different colourway on each side.

What the extra money buys is the name and the house’s design archive. Those are real reasons to buy, but they’re not more silk: per square metre, this tier costs 2.7 times as much as the $150 to $299 tier.

## Why size changes the answer

A 90 cm square has 0.81 square metres of silk; a 70 cm square has 0.49, about 40% less. A 70 cm price always looks cheaper for that reason, so compare per square metre. Several “90” squares are smaller than the name: 15 of the 51 we checked measure under 90 cm on the maker’s own page.

## Is a $200 silk scarf worth it?

By the numbers, a $200 square sits in the tier where makers state the most, and at about $250 per square metre it costs a third of a fashion-house square for the same amount of silk. Worn twice a week for three years, that’s 312 wears, or about 64 cents a wear. Whether it’s worth it to you depends on the design: buy the one you’ll actually wear.

## Common claims about silk scarf prices, checked

- **No size.** You may read prices that don’t say what size they’re for. For a 90 cm square, the floor is $50, not the $10 to $20 you may see quoted, and only 3 of 51 cost under $100 (one of them a Turkish home-market price, converted).
- **“Luxury means heavier silk.”** None of the 10 fashion-house squares states a weight at all.
- **“Luxury is always hand-rolled; cheap is machine-sewn.”** Four of the 10 house squares say hand-rolled; Quince’s $50 square does too.
- **“Designer prints are vibrant on both sides.”** Only Loewe’s states two sides, as a double-face weave.
- **“$200 and up is designer territory.”** The cheapest fashion-house 90 cm square we found is $530.
- **House prices of “$400 to $800+” or “$300 to $900+”.** In our set they run $530 to $650.
- **“19 to 22 momme.”** None of the 51 states more than 18.
- **Cost per wear.** One answer put a $200 scarf worn twice a week for three years at $1.28 a wear; it’s $0.64.

## UK prices

Few makers in our set show a UK price, so most UK figures are home-market prices converted. Where the maker’s own UK store shows one: Karen Mabon £120, Aubrey Kurlansky £169, Silken Favours £180, Liberty London £245 and Sabina Savage £275, all for about 90 cm.

## What silk pocket squares and kimonos cost

**Silk pocket squares**, from nine makers’ own US sites: $14 to $250, median $145. The Tie Bar’s 30 cm square is $14; Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren are $98.50; [Rampley & Co](https://www.rampleyandco.com/products/the-hay-wain-by-john-constable-pocket-square)’s 42 cm fine-art squares $145; Drake’s $160; Turnbull & Asser $185; Louis Vuitton $220; Ferragamo $250. Aubrey Kurlansky’s 42 cm silk twill pocket square is $59. We compare 20 by named artists in our [guide to artists’ pocket squares](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/art-pocket-squares).

**Silk kimonos**, from six makers’ own US sites: $120 to $3,120, median about $540. Most are long robes in silk satin: [Quince](https://www.quince.com/women/washable-silk-robe-xs-xl?color=ivory) $120, Kim+Ono $250, Lilysilk $269, Olivia von Halle $810, Natori $895, Carine Gilson $3,120. Aubrey Kurlansky’s kimonos are waist-length jackets in the same 18 momme silk twill as his scarves, $479.

## How we checked

We read one standard silk square of about 90 cm (84 to 92 cm) from each maker’s own product page on 17 October 2026, from its US store where it has one, and recorded the price, size, weight, hem, print and country of making word for word. A spec the page doesn’t state counts as not stated; “hand-finished” doesn’t count as hand-rolled. This guide uses 51 squares from our full price table, which is published with our [worldwide guide to luxury silk scarves](https://thekansocollective.com/blog/best-luxury-silk-scarves). We re-checked the five prices this guide leans on hardest the same evening; none had changed.
