## What makes a great silk scarf design

A good scarf design works flat, folded and tied. A few things the best ones have in common:

### A square composition

Design for the square first. Balance the four corners and let the eye travel around the whole piece, rather than putting everything in one spot.

### A centre and a border

Many classic scarf designs pair a strong centre with a frame around it. The border is what shows when the scarf is folded into a triangle or knotted at the neck.

### Symmetry

Mirror into four reflects one image into the four quarters around the centre, the traditional way to turn a single motif into a whole square. Move the top-left copy and the others follow.

### Key details inside the hem

The edge of a silk scarf is rolled into a fine hem, so keep faces, names and signatures at least 1.5 cm in from the edge. Turn on Show guides to see the line.

### Image resolution

Aim for 150 dpi at the size you choose. On a 90 cm scarf that's about 5,300 pixels across. The sharpness check shows each image's resolution as you scale it.

### Colour on silk

Silk has a soft lustre that deepens rich colours and quietens pale ones. Strong contrast reads beautifully; very pale tints close to the background colour can fade away.

## Scarf sizes

## For artists: see your work as a silk scarf

Upload your artwork and see it on silk in a minute: as a full square, a single piece on a coloured ground, or mirrored into four. It's a quick way to find out whether a painting, a drawing or a pattern wants to be a scarf.

We work with artists, and their work stays theirs. If you'd like to sell your designs under your own name, we'd love to hear from you.
