Hand finished. ## How to tie a silk head scarf - **Tied at the nape.** Fold the square corner to corner, lay the long edge along your hairline and knot the ends at the back of your neck. A 90 cm square. - **The 1950s headscarf.** The same triangle, the ends crossed under your chin and tied at the nape. A 90 cm square; a 70 cm knots under the chin only. - **The headband.** Fold a band 4 to 6 cm wide, put it under your hair at the nape and knot it on top or at the side. Neatest from a 70 cm square. - **Round a ponytail or bun.** A narrow band wrapped twice round the hair tie, finished with a knot or a bow. Neatest from a 70 cm square. A 90 × 90 cm square (35 inches) to cover your hair and tie at the nape: folded corner to corner, its long edge is 127 cm. A 70 × 70 cm square (27.5 inches) makes a 99 cm edge, enough for a headband, a ponytail or a headscarf knotted under the chin. Fold it into a triangle, lay the long edge along your hairline with the point at the back, then knot the ends at the nape, or cross them under your chin first for the 1950s look. Silk twill is smooth, so a firm knot and a hair pin at the crown keep it in place. What is the easiest head scarf knot? The nape knot: fold the square into a triangle, lay the long edge along your hairline and tie a double knot at the back of your neck, under the point. It takes ten seconds with a 90 cm square and needs no pins. What is the best material for a head scarf? Silk twill. Its fine diagonal weave grips a knot and holds a fold, where satin and charmeuse slip, and it stays light and breathable in the sun. Ours is 18 momme silk twill, a medium weight that drapes softly but keeps its shape. What is a scarf worn on the head called? A headscarf, or head scarf. Tied under the chin it is often called a kerchief or a babushka; folded into a narrow strip it is a headband or bandeau; the 1950s style, crossed under the chin and tied at the nape, is simply the 1950s headscarf. Is it culturally insensitive to wear a head scarf? No. A printed silk square worn on the head is a classic of everyday fashion, worn by women everywhere for generations, from the 1950s headscarf to a scarf tied back for a drive or a beach day.
