The Kanso Cut

We didn't invent this shape. Japanese tradespeople did. Builders and scaffolders have worn roomy, knee-gathered work pants for over a century, because you can climb, crouch and kneel in them all day.

We kept the construction: a full upper leg gathered at the knee into a separate, fitted lower-leg panel, so you get room where you bend and a clean line where it shows. Then we made it in one smooth, dense cotton twill with a drawcord waist and deep patch pockets.

Our mission: make pants with room to move and a line that stays sharp. Made simply, made well, with nothing you don't need.

A man walks down misty stone steps past lanterns in a Japanese hillside village, in a grey overshirt and olive Kanso Cut pants.

Why we started

It started with a pair of pants we kept seeing in Japan. On builders on scaffolding, on the man running a tiny coffee bar, on office workers at the weekend. Roomy through the seat and thigh, neat from the knee down, in cotton smart enough to look like it meant it.

They looked more comfortable than anyone we knew back home, and somehow sharper too. At home the choice was skinny chinos that pull when you sit down, or sweatpants that look like you've given up. Nothing in between.

So we made the pants we couldn't buy. We learned how the shape works, kept what makes it work, and cut it in structured cotton for everyday wear.

We named the brand after kanso, the Japanese design idea of leaving out what you don't need, and we try to live up to it: no logos on the leg, no stretch panels, no gimmicks. Just a better shape, with credit where it's due.
