Which size of silk scarf suits how you'll wear it?

3 questions, 15 seconds.

Question 1 of 3

Where will you wear it most?

Question 2 of 3

How do you like it to sit?

Question 3 of 3

Will people see the back of the silk?

Your answer

A silk ribbon or a small square

A narrow ribbon of about 5 × 87 cm ties round a bag handle or a ponytail; a 45 cm square makes a neckerchief. Per square metre these are the most expensive formats, so compare prices by size.

See silk scarf prices by size

Your answer

A 65 to 70 cm square

Folded on the bias it makes a band of about 90 to 99 cm: a neck scarf with a small knot, or a hair scarf. If the knot shows the back of the silk, look for a square printed on both sides.

How to tie a silk square

Your answer

A 90 cm square

The classic size: a band of about 125 cm, enough for a headscarf, a loose knot over a coat or a belt. Standard silk squares of about 90 cm cost $50 to $690 on makers' own sites, one per brand in our 80-brand index; special editions cost more.

Your answer

A large square or a long scarf

A 130 to 140 cm square or a long scarf of about 65 × 180 cm goes over the shoulders or a coat collar. Many large shawls blend silk with cashmere, so read the fibre line.

On hermes.com in the US, a Hermès silk Twilly costs $260, a silk twill scarf 45 (the gavroche) $325, a bandana 55 $335, a silk scarf 70 $500 and the classic silk twill scarf 90 (the carré) $660. A scarf 90 printed on both sides (double face) is $800, and the cashmere-and-silk shawl 140 is $1,575. In the UK the same formats are £195, £245, £255, £395, £520, £640 and £1,210. Every price here is from hermes.com, checked on 20 October 2026.

The carré has risen fast. Archived copies of Hermès’s own US listing show a scarf 90 at $435 in October 2021, $550 in April 2024 and $620 in June 2025; it went to $660 between 2 January and 3 February 2026. That’s 52% in five years. And the sizes are smaller than the names: Hermès lists its “90” at 34.8 inches (88.4 cm) and its “70” at 25 inches (63.5 cm).

We sell artist-designed silk scarves, not Hermès, and we have no connection with Hermès. Every Hermès price and fact on this page is from Hermès’s own website and reports, or from archived copies of its website, each linked. Aubrey Kurlansky, whose scarves appear in one table below, is a co-founder of The Kanso Collective.

Key takeaways

  • The classic Hermès carré is $660 (US) or £520 (UK) for a silk twill scarf 90. All 44 scarf 90 listings we saw on the US site were $660.
  • The Twilly, at $260 (£195), is the cheapest Hermès silk scarf; only the pocket square 45 ($230, £185) costs less. It’s a 5 × 87 cm ribbon, so per square metre it’s the most expensive standard format: about $5,900, seven times the scarf 90’s $845.
  • The “70” measures 63.5 cm on its US page (25 inches), so it has about half the silk of the 88.4 cm “90” for $500.
  • Prices rose 36% to 59% in five years. Scarf 90: $435 (October 2021) to $660. Twilly: $180 to $260. Scarf 45: $205 to $325.
  • Hermès guarantees authenticity only for scarves bought from hermes.com, its stores or authorised distributors, and says it “cannot guarantee nor verify” any other purchase.

Prices are list prices in each country’s store; US prices exclude sales tax. Centimetres are our conversion of Hermès’s inches. Every size above except the Twilly’s carries a note on its page that, as the piece is hand-rolled, “the dimensions indicated may vary.” The fabric wording for the losange and the pleated scarf comes from an earlier copy of the product page; the price is today’s. Variants cost more: a “forever” Twilly with a leather detail is $315, a long Twilly $420, and a cashmere-and-silk scarf 70 $900.

Not priced here, because we couldn’t verify a current price on hermes.com: the Maxi Twilly, a silk twill carré 140 and the plissé scarf 90. We read the first two of four pages of the US silk listing (96 of 170 products); the rest was blocked to automated reading, so a rarer format may exist at another price.

Per square metre of silk, a Hermès Twilly costs about seven times as much as a scarf 90.

What size is each Hermès scarf?

Hermès names its formats by a round number of centimetres, but its US pages give the size in inches, and the inches are smaller than the names. The scarf 90 is 34.8 inches (88.4 cm), the scarf 70 is 25 inches (63.5 cm), the scarf 45 is 16.5 by 16.9 inches (about 42 cm) and the bandana 55 is 22 inches (55.9 cm). The shawl 140 is 53.5 by 53.1 inches (about 135 cm).

Our arithmetic from the sizes and prices on hermes.com, 20 October 2026.

The scarf 90 is the best value Hermès sells by the square metre, and the shawl 140 is close behind. Broadly, the smaller the format, the more each square metre costs, though the bandana 55 ($1,073) is cheaper per square metre than the larger scarf 70 ($1,240). The scarf 70 has about half the silk of the 90 (0.40 against 0.78 square metres) for 76% of the price.

Hermès 70 vs 90: which should you buy?

Buy the 90 if you want one Hermès square to wear many ways; buy the 70 if you’ll mostly knot it at the neck or in the hair. Folded on the bias, the 90’s 88.4 cm makes a band about 125 cm long, enough for a headscarf, a loose knot over a coat or a belt. At 63.5 cm, the 70 makes a band about 90 cm long, a neck scarf with a small knot. You pay $160 more for the 90 ($660 against $500) and get nearly twice the silk.

How much have Hermès scarf prices gone up?

The scarf 90 has gone from $435 to $660 in five years, up 52%. These are the prices on Hermès’s own US listing pages, as archived by the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine:

The scarf 45 and Twilly figures for 2021 to January 2026 come from Hermès’s small-formats listing, archived on the same days or within two days, except the January 2026 Twilly, from a copy of 8 January 2026. A dash means no archived copy from that date showed the format.

What Hermès and the press have said about the rises:

  • 2025, US: Hermès raised US prices from 1 May 2025 to offset new tariffs, CNBC reported on 17 April 2025, naming “bags, scarves and other goods”. In the archived pages, the scarf 90 went from $590 in early April 2025 to $620 by early June.
  • 2025, worldwide: Reuters reported on 30 July 2025 that Hermès had raised prices by about 7% that year, with a further 5% in the US.
  • 2026: “Hermes plans price increase of 5-6% this year,” Reuters reported on 12 February 2026. On the US site, the scarf 90 moved from $620 to $660 (6.5%) between 2 January and 3 February 2026.

These are company-wide figures. Hermès’s own annual report gives no price-increase percentage.

Why is a Hermès scarf so expensive?

Hermès doesn’t explain its prices, but its own pages and reports say what goes into a scarf:

  • It makes the whole thing itself. Hermès’s 2025 annual report says its textile division, Holding Textile Hermès, covers “from creation to sewing, through weaving, engraving, printing, dyeing and finishing”. The division’s registered address is in Pierre-Bénite, in the Lyon area. The standard scarves we read all say “Made in France”.
  • The engraving is part of the craft. The same report credits “the engravers, who are able to reproduce all the nuances and subtleties” of its Bouquet Final design.
  • The edges are rolled by hand on every square, shawl and bandana page we read. The Twilly’s pages don’t say so.
  • It sells through its own stores. Of its 294 stores in 45 countries, 234 are run by Hermès itself, and Hermès-run stores bring in more than 92% of its revenue, according to the report.
  • It’s a big, growing business. Silk and textiles earned Hermès €964 million in 2025, 6% of group sales, and grew 10% in the first half of 2026. The first Hermès silk scarf dates from 1937.

What the pages don’t give: the silk’s weight in momme, the number of colours or screens in a design, or how long a design takes. We haven’t repeated those figures from other sources.

How can you tell if a Hermès scarf is real?

Buy it from Hermès, and you don’t have to. Hermès says “The only way to guarantee the authenticity of an Hermès product is by making your purchase through our official website Hermes.com, at an Hermès store or through an authorized distributor”, and that it “cannot guarantee nor verify” the authenticity of anything bought elsewhere (Hermès authentication FAQ). Its annual report says it seizes “several hundred thousand” counterfeit products a year of all kinds, online and in shops.

Hermès publishes no guide to spotting a fake scarf. What its own pages do tell you, so you can check a scarf against them:

  • Fabric: silk twill, “100% silk”, for the scarf 45, bandana 55 and scarf 90; “70% cashmere, 30% silk” for the cashmere-and-silk scarves and shawls.
  • Edges: “hand-rolled edges” on squares, bandanas and shawls.
  • Where it’s made: “Made in France” on the standard scarves we read; the exceptional embroidered scarf 90 says made in India.
  • Size: in inches, with the note that hand-rolled sizes “may vary”. A “90” that measures a full 90 cm isn’t a sign of anything either way.
  • Care: an earlier copy of a Hermès scarf page tells owners to “entrust it to a professional dry cleaner when needed”.

For any silk scarf, the fibre label is the first check: in the US, “100% silk” may be used only for a scarf that’s all silk (16 CFR 303.43). A burn test on one loose thread shows whether it’s silk at all (silk smells of burnt hair and leaves a brittle black bead, according to MFA Boston’s materials database), but it can’t tell you who made it.

Resale prices: we found no primary, dated source for what Hermès scarves sell for second-hand, so we don’t quote any.

FAQ

How much is a Hermès scarf? On hermes.com in the US, a silk twill scarf 90 (the classic carré) is $660, a silk scarf 70 is $500, a silk twill scarf 45 is $325 and a Twilly is $260 (checked 20 October 2026). In the UK they’re £520, £395, £245 and £195. A double face scarf 90 is $800 and a cashmere-and-silk shawl 140 is $1,575.

How much is a Hermès Twilly? $260 in the US and £195 in the UK on hermes.com (20 October 2026). It’s a silk ribbon of 2 by 34.1 inches (about 5 by 87 cm). A “forever” Twilly with a leather detail is $315 and a long Twilly $420. In October 2021 a Twilly was $180.

What sizes do Hermès scarves come in? The main silk formats are the Twilly (5 × 87 cm), scarf 45 (about 42 cm), bandana 55 (55.9 cm), scarf 70 (63.5 cm), scarf 90 (88.4 cm) and the 140 shawls and scarves (about 135 cm), plus the long, narrow losange and the triangle. Sizes are from Hermès’s US pages, which give inches and note that hand-rolled sizes may vary.

Is the Hermès 70 or 90 better? For versatility, the 90: at 88.4 cm it ties as a headscarf, a loose knot over a coat or a belt, and per square metre it’s the cheapest Hermès silk square ($845 against $1,240 for the 70). The 70, listed at 63.5 cm, is a neck and hair scarf. The 90 is $660 and the 70 $500 in the US.

How much have Hermès scarf prices gone up? On Hermès’s own US site, the scarf 90 went from $435 in October 2021 to $660 in February 2026, up 52%; it has been $660 since. The Twilly went from $180 to $260 and the scarf 45 from $205 to $325 over the same years. Reuters reported a planned group-wide rise of 5% to 6% for 2026.

Why are Hermès scarves so expensive? Hermès doesn’t say, but its annual report describes an in-house textile chain from design to weaving, engraving, printing, dyeing and finishing, based near Lyon. Its scarves are made in France with hand-rolled edges and sold mainly through its own stores (234 of its 294 stores are run by Hermès). Per square metre, a scarf 90 costs $845.

How can you tell if a Hermès scarf is real? Hermès guarantees authenticity only for scarves bought from hermes.com, a Hermès store or an authorised distributor, and says it can’t verify anything bought elsewhere. It publishes no guide to spotting a fake. Its pages describe the silk scarves as 100% silk twill with hand-rolled edges, made in France.

Is a Hermès shawl silk or cashmere? The shawl 140, triangle and some scarves 45 and 70 are cashmere and silk: “70% cashmere, 30% silk” on Hermès’s pages. The scarf 90, bandana 55, Twilly and silk scarf 45 are 100% silk. Cashmere is a different fibre: US law defines it as the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat, averaging 19 microns or less.

How we checked

  • Prices were read on hermes.com’s US store (in dollars) and UK store (in pounds) on 20 October 2026: the category listings, and the product pages where we could reach them, with the price, size and fabric line copied word for word.
  • History comes from the Internet Archive’s copies of Hermès’s US listing pages, one standard product per format per date, each linked above.
  • Making and authenticity facts are from Hermès’s product pages, its authentication FAQ and its 2025 Universal Registration Document, plus its first-half 2026 results. Press figures are attributed to the outlet and date.
  • What we left out: any format we couldn’t price on hermes.com today, resale prices (no primary source), and claims about colours, screens or hours per design that Hermès doesn’t publish.
  • Who we are: The Kanso Collective sells artist-designed silk scarves. We don’t sell Hermès.
