Question 3 of 3

Which birthday is it?

Your answer

Boxed, with your card, sent to her

Sabina Savage's Chasing the Pearl ($415, £275) arrives in a gift box with a free handwritten card, and its FAQ covers sending gifts to another address. Longchamp's Forêt square ($425, £295) adds a free gift box and printed card. In the UK, Liberty's Hera (£245) is the one seller that says the parcel shows no prices when you add a gift message.

The best luxury silk scarves

Your answer

Gift wrapped, under $250

Elizabetta's Flora square, $190 (£170), comes gift wrapped with your note, delivered free in 5 to 8 business days in the US or 2 to 4 in the UK. Silken Favours' Sea Breeze ($245, £180) comes in a gift box with a greeting card. Both give 14 days to return it.

Ways to tie a silk square

Your answer

An artist's design you'll give in person

Aubrey Kurlansky's The Winged Qilin, a 90 cm square of 18 momme silk twill, printed on both sides with hand-rolled hems, is $219 (£169), a limited edition, made to order and finished by hand: allow 2 to 3 weeks. Its page calls the qilin a symbol of longevity. The site doesn't mention gift wrap or a gift message, so send it to yourself. Dry clean only; 14-day returns.

A silk scarf is a good 50th, 60th or 70th birthday gift for her: there’s no size to guess, it doesn’t print her age on anything, and she can wear it for years. If you won’t be there when she opens it, choose the seller before the print. Sabina Savage ($415, £275) and Longchamp ($425, £295) both box the scarf, add your note and send it to her address. For less, Elizabetta’s Flora square ($190, £170) comes gift wrapped with your message. Under $100, The Met Store’s $98 square takes a free gift message in the US, and in the UK John Lewis’s £49 square takes one too.

A birthday can’t move, so we checked what matters when the scarf goes straight to her. On 20 October 2026 we read 19 silk scarves on 19 sellers’ own sites, each 100% silk, for four things: a note in the parcel, a gift box or wrap, delivery to an address that isn’t yours, and the price kept out of the box. Ten put your note in the parcel and six box the scarf as standard, but only one seller says it keeps the prices off the paperwork, and none says it does all four. Five start the returns clock before she’s opened it.

Of 19 sellers, none states all four: your note in the parcel, a gift box, delivery to her, and no price in the box.

The short answer

The Kanso Collective sells Aubrey Kurlansky’s scarves, and he is one of its co-founders. Every other price, delivery time and policy below is from the seller’s own site, checked 20 October 2026.

“Allow” is the longest standard delivery time the seller states; add a few days for it to be made ready if the seller says so. ”–” means the seller doesn’t sell in that currency or ship to that country from the page we checked, or (Jessie Zhao, Silver & Riley) shows only a converted price. Burberry’s scarf was out of stock online in the UK when we checked; Tate’s was on a 15% promotion. M&S’s US site sells the Jaeger square at $125. Inch sizes are converted by us.

Why a silk scarf works for a milestone birthday

The pages that rank for “50th birthday gift for her” sell decade necklaces, personalised trinkets and experience days. We looked at the results pages we saved on 19 October 2026 (the 50th, 60th and 70th in the US; the 50th and 60th in the UK). On those results pages, only one result’s title or snippet mentioned a scarf (a Burberry silk twill scarf, in a UK list of gifts around £200). A scarf has three things going for it at a milestone:

  • It doesn’t announce the number. Nothing on it says “Fifty and Fabulous”, which matters to plenty of women turning 50 or 60.
  • There’s no size to get wrong. Every pick here is a square or a long scarf, not a garment.
  • It lasts. Silk twill holds its colour and shape for years if it’s dry cleaned (every Aubrey Kurlansky piece is dry clean only).

A silk scarf isn’t a traditional milestone gift; it’s a good one. We found no etiquette book or official source that names a traditional gift for a 50th, 60th or 70th birthday. Gold, diamond and platinum come from wedding anniversaries and royal jubilees: Queen Victoria “celebrated Golden and Diamond Jubilees marking 50 and 60 years of her reign”, says the royal household, and Queen Elizabeth II was “the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee”, for 70 years. Borrowing those names for a birthday is a nice idea, and they make a useful colour cue: a gold or ochre print for a 50th, something clear and bright for a 60th, silver, grey or white for a 70th.

How to choose: colour, size and print

A woman at a table with a cup and pearls, a pale blue and gold silk square looped round her neck and held in one hand
The Winged Qilin by Aubrey Kurlansky, a 90 cm square, worn looped at the neck.
  1. Colour: start from her wardrobe, not yours. Look at the coat and the two or three tops she wears most and choose a print that shares one colour with them.
  2. Size: 90 cm unless you know otherwise. A 90 cm (35 in) square knots at the neck, ties in the hair and goes over the shoulders. A 60 to 70 cm square, like Jaeger’s 64 cm at M&S, suits someone who only knots one neatly at the throat. A long scarf suits a woman who wears hers over a coat. Our silk scarf size guide has the measurements.
  3. Print: a subject she’d hang on a wall. Many squares end up framed. Botanicals and birds are the safe choices; a museum square (the Met, Tate, the Royal Academy) carries a story she can tell.
  4. The label: 100% silk. Every pick here is. “Satin” and “silk feel” usually mean polyester.

Under $100 or £80

  • Quince, $50: 87.6 cm, 100% silk, “Handrolled edge”, dry clean only. It sends gift orders to her home, and the gift message is emailed to her when the order ships rather than printed. Returns run 365 days from delivery, and she can start one from her own Quince account. US and Canada only.
  • Nordstrom, $69: its own 89 cm square, 100% silk. A printed gift message is free and a fabric gift bag is $5; the free gift box is only for in-store purchases and pickup. Nordstrom has no time limit on returns and offers gift receipts.
  • The Met Store, $98: the Cloisters Garden square, 91 cm of 100% silk twill. A gift message is free and gift wrap is $6. Standard delivery is $12.95 and takes 3 to 8 business days. Returns are 90 days from shipment, and a recipient gets store credit. US and Canada only.
  • Echo New York, $99: the Bookworm square, 89 cm, 100% silk. Echo ships to a recipient’s address but offers no gift wrap and states no gift message. Returns run 30 days from the invoice date.
  • John Lewis, £49: the Wildflowers square, 90 cm, 100% silk, with a gift message at checkout for smaller items. UK delivery takes 2 to 5 days. A gift can be exchanged in a shop within 30 days; gifts bought between 1 October and 24 December 2026 can go back until 23 January 2027.
  • Jaeger at M&S, £59: a 64 cm pure silk square with hand-rolled edges, with a gift message option. 28-day returns.

$100 to $250 or £80 to £200

  • Jessie Zhao, $149: Night Jungle Gathering, about 89 cm of 100% mulberry silk, the same on both sides, in a presentation box. The gift message is digital, sent to her by email or text when it’s delivered. Ground delivery in the US takes 2 to 7 business days. 14-day returns.
  • Karen Mabon, $164 (£120): In the Greenhouse, a 90 cm silk square with hand-rolled edges, dry clean only. Its site states no gift message or wrap, and its pages give four different delivery times; the longest is 6 to 11 working days to North America. 14 days to ask for a return.
  • Royal Academy Shop, £125 and Orla Kiely, £125: two 90 cm silk squares for the UK. Neither states a gift message or wrap; both deliver in about 3 to 5 working days.
  • Tate Shop, £170: Hew Locke’s The Bugler, 90 cm of pure silk with hand-rolled edges, “presented in a slim black box, perfect for gifting”. It’s slow: 1 to 2 weeks in the UK (the product page says 1 to 3), 2 to 4 weeks to the US. Returns are 30 days from purchase, not delivery.
  • Elizabetta, $190 (£170): the Flora foulard, 90 cm of silk twill, hand-rolled and sewn. “All of our items come gift wrapped”, and the cart has a free box for “Order notes or gift message”. Free delivery takes 5 to 8 business days in the US and 2 to 4 in the UK, from a warehouse in each. 14-day returns with a free label. Our pick between $100 and $250.
  • Aubrey Kurlansky, The Winged Qilin, $219 (£169): Aubrey Kurlansky is an artist in Bangkok who spent years designing interiors for luxury hotels in Singapore and Bangkok; The Kanso Collective sells his work. This 90 cm square is 18 momme silk twill, about 64 g, printed on both sides, with hand-rolled hems and his signature printed in the design. The product page says the qilin is “a symbol of luck, good omens, protection, prosperity, success, and longevity”. Like every piece The Kanso Collective sells, it’s a limited edition, never mass produced: made to order in collaboration with the artist and finished by hand, then delivered in 2 to 3 weeks by tracked shipping ($30 or £24 an order). The site doesn’t mention a gift message, gift wrap or a separate delivery address, so send it to yourself and give it in person. Returns within 14 days of delivery, unworn; return postage is international and yours to pay. Dry clean only.
  • Silken Favours, $245 (£180): Sea Breeze, 90 cm of 100% silk, dry clean only. Every scarf comes in its gift box with a greeting card, and you can leave a handwritten message in the checkout notes. UK delivery is 1 to 2 working days; to the US, “around 10 days”. Returns are 14 days from dispatch.

$250 and up or £200 and up

  • Silver & Riley, $275: Sunday in Saint-Germain, 90 cm of 17.5 momme silk, hand-rolled, in a ribbon-tied box as standard. It states no gift message. US expedited delivery arrives within 3 business days. Returns: 30 days from delivery, with a refund only if you start it within 14 (its policy pages disagree on the number).
  • Liberty London, $340 (£245): the Hera print, 90 × 90 cm, 100% silk. In the UK, a gift message is free on a printed card, and with a gift message the dispatch note shows no prices: the only seller here that says so. Gift messages “cannot be added to orders shipped internationally”, so not in the US. No gift wrap online. Free returns within 30 days of delivery, and a gift can be returned with proof of purchase. Our UK pick when the scarf goes straight to her.
  • Sabina Savage, $415 (£275): Chasing the Pearl, 90 cm of silk twill, hand-rolled, dry clean only. Every scarf arrives in a branded gift box with tissue, a gold wax seal and a dust bag, with a free handwritten card, and its FAQ handles gifts to another address (one order per address). $20 delivery in 2 to 5 business days in the US; free in 1 to 2 in the UK. 14 days to ask for a return, and the label ($40, or £10 in the UK) comes off the refund. Our pick above $250.
  • Longchamp, $425 (£295): the Forêt square, 90 cm, 100% silk, with a hand-topstitched hem. A free gift box and a free printed message card at checkout, and it ships to an address that isn’t the billing address. Free ground delivery in 5 to 7 business days in the US; overnight is $32. Free returns within 30 days, but only in the country it was bought in.
  • Burberry, $555 (£375): the London Silk Scarf, 90 cm of silk twill with hand-rolled edges. Gift packaging is “Complimentary and plastic-free”, with a message. Free US delivery in 3 to 5 working days, and Burberry needs a signature on delivery, so a surprise parcel can be missed. 14 days to start a return; UK gifts bought online can be returned “within 14 days of shipping”.

Can the scarf be sent straight to her?

That’s the question for a gift you won’t hand over yourself. Here’s what the 19 sellers’ own pages say, read on 20 October 2026. “Not stated” means the product, delivery, returns and help pages say nothing; it doesn’t mean the seller refuses.

Any online shop will take a delivery address, so the bigger gaps are the last two rows: almost no seller says what’s printed on the paperwork in the box. If that matters, Liberty’s UK gift message is the one written promise; elsewhere, order to yourself and hand it over, or ask the seller before you buy.

Order by: how long each one takes

Count back from her birthday by the “Allow” column above, and add a week. Most UK sellers deliver in 2 to 5 working days, and Burberry next day in the UK. The slow ones are the ones made or shipped from further away: Tate’s up to 3 weeks in the UK and 2 to 4 weeks to the US, Silver & Riley’s 7 to 28 days overseas, Silken Favours’ “around 10 days” to the US, and Aubrey Kurlansky’s 2 to 3 weeks, since every piece is made to order.

If the birthday is close, most US sellers sell express delivery: Nordstrom’s next business day is $20, Longchamp’s overnight $32 and Elizabetta’s guaranteed one-day service $50. Silken Favours, which has no express rate, says “Please get in touch if you need your order urgently or for a specific date”.

If she doesn’t like it: when the returns clock starts

A gift sent early can lose part of its returns window before she opens it. Five of the 19 count from before delivery:

  • Silken Favours: 14 days from dispatch.
  • Burberry (UK gifts): “within 14 days of shipping”.
  • Tate Shop: 30 days from purchase.
  • Echo New York: 30 days from the invoice date (though anything bought from 1 November to 25 December can go back until 15 January).
  • The Met Store: 90 days from shipment.

The longest windows are Nordstrom’s (no time limit), Quince’s (365 days) and the Met’s (90 days). Seven sellers say a gift can be returned or exchanged by the person who received it, among them Quince (from her own account), the Met (for store credit), Nordstrom (with a gift receipt), John Lewis and M&S (in a shop) and Liberty (with proof of purchase). If you choose a 14-day seller, send it close to the day and put the order details in with the card.

A 50th birthday gift for her

At 50, choose for the life she has now, not a number. A 90 cm square in a print that suits her wardrobe is the safe choice, and a gold or ochre colourway nods to the golden jubilee without saying it. Our picks: Elizabetta’s Flora ($190, £170), gift wrapped with your note; for a bigger gesture, Sabina Savage ($415, £275).

A 60th birthday gift for her

In Japan the 60th birthday is kanreki: a person has “lived through the entire sixty-year cycle of the traditional eto (ten stems and twelve branches) calendar”, says the Encyclopedia of Shinto, and is traditionally given “a red cap, a seat cushion, and a chanchanko vest”. In Korea, the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture describes hwangap, when the person wears the finest clothes, newly made and presented by their children (our translation). A scarf isn’t part of either tradition, but a red print or a newly chosen piece of clothing from her children is in the spirit of both. In the UK and US, diamond is the 60th anniversary and jubilee name. Our picks: Longchamp ($425, £295) or Liberty’s Hera (£245) in the UK; for a symbol of longevity, Aubrey Kurlansky’s The Winged Qilin ($219, £169).

A 70th birthday gift for her

Platinum is the 70th in the jubilee and anniversary lists, so a silver, grey or white ground is a quiet nod. At 70 she may have a drawer of scarves already, which makes the print and the story matter more: a museum square such as Tate’s Hew Locke (£170) or the Met’s Cloisters Garden ($98) comes with one. If she knots a scarf neatly at the throat rather than draping it, choose a smaller square like Jaeger’s 64 cm at M&S (£59).

What we’d buy

If you’ll be there: the print she’ll love, from any seller above. If you won’t: Sabina Savage’s Chasing the Pearl ($415, £275), boxed with a handwritten card and sent to her address. Between $100 and $250, Elizabetta’s Flora ($190, £170), gift wrapped with your message. In the UK, Liberty’s Hera (£245), because it’s the one seller that says the parcel won’t show the price. Under $100 in the US, the Met’s Cloisters Garden square ($98) with a free message and $6 wrap. For more ideas: silk scarves for mum, by budget, luxury silk scarf gifts under $250 and which scarf suits which occasion.

FAQ

Is a silk scarf a good 50th birthday gift for her? Yes. There’s no size to guess, it doesn’t announce her age, and silk lasts for years. Choose a 90 cm square in a colour she already wears, from a seller that can add your note and box it if you’re not giving it in person.

What is the traditional gift for a 50th birthday for a woman? There isn’t one we could source. “Gold for a 50th” comes from golden wedding anniversaries and the Golden Jubilee, not from a birthday tradition. Using gold as a colour cue for a 50th birthday present is a nice idea, not a custom.

What is the traditional 60th birthday gift? No Western source names one; diamond is the 60th wedding anniversary and jubilee name. In Japan, the 60th birthday (kanreki) is traditionally marked with a red cap, a cushion and a red chanchanko vest; in Korea, children traditionally give the parent new, fine clothes for hwangap.

What do you buy a woman turning 60 who has everything? Something she can’t buy in a department store: a museum square (Tate, the Royal Academy, the Met) or an artist’s design, chosen in a colour she wears. A good seller makes the difference: Sabina Savage and Longchamp box the scarf, add your card and send it to her.

What do you get your wife for her 70th birthday? A scarf works if you choose the print for her: a subject she loves, in a colour she wears, at 90 cm unless she only knots hers at the neck. Platinum is the 70th jubilee and anniversary name, so a silver or white ground is a quiet nod to it.

How much should I spend on a 60th birthday present for my mum? The 19 silk scarves we checked cost from $50 to $555 (£49 to £375). Between $100 and $250 (£80 to £200) you get a full 90 cm square with a stated hem from a scarf specialist; above that you’re paying for the name and the presentation.

Can I have a silk scarf sent straight to her with a gift message? Often, but check each part. Of 19 sellers, 10 put your note in the parcel and 6 state they’ll deliver to another address; only Liberty, for UK orders with a gift message, says the parcel shows no prices. No seller we checked states all four gift services.

How far ahead should I order a birthday scarf? At least two weeks for UK sellers and most US ones, and three weeks for Aubrey Kurlansky’s squares, which are made to order. Tate allows up to four weeks to the US.
