A long silk wrap for under your coat
Echo New York's Snow Leopard Silk Wrap is 69 × 183 cm of silk twill at $149, long enough to wrap twice under a collar. Shaku's Daisy Blush is 70 × 200 cm of Como twill at £110 in the UK and $165 in the US. For crepe de chine, Liberty's Hera long scarf is $350 (£250).
What momme means, in gramsYour answer
A big, heavy silk square
NOCHKA's 43-inch square is 109 cm of 19 momme silk charmeuse at $69.99: about 98 g of silk, the most of any scarf we checked whose page gives a weight. For a 90 cm twill, Silver & Riley's Sunday in Saint-Germain is 17.5 momme at $275; for a shawl-size square, Liberty's Peacock Hall 140 is $370 (£265).

A long scarf with an artist's design and its weight stated
Most of Aubrey Kurlansky's long scarves are 65 × 180 cm of 18 momme silk twill, at $255 (£199); The Kanso Collective sells his work. Every design starts as his own artwork. Each, including The Laocoon (65 × 180 cm) and the smaller Flowers Radiate Joy (50 × 150 cm), is a limited edition, made to order and finished by hand, and arrives in 2 to 3 weeks. Returns within 14 days of delivery, unworn. Dry clean only.

A silk-cashmere or silk-wool blend
If the scarf is your only layer outdoors, the wool or cashmere should do the insulating. Louis Jane's Berica Breeze is 70% cashmere and 30% silk, 70 × 210 cm, at $235. Liberty's Peacock Garden is 51% wool and 49% silk at $385 (£275). Under $100: Quince's cashmere-silk scarf at $64.

The best silk scarf for winter is a big one in a closely woven silk, worn under your coat collar with wool over it. For most people that’s Echo New York’s Snow Leopard Silk Wrap: $149 for 69 × 183 cm of 100% silk twill, long enough to wrap twice. In the UK, Shaku’s Daisy Blush is £110 for 70 × 200 cm of silk twill made in Como. If the scarf itself has to keep you warm, buy a blend: Louis Jane’s Berica Breeze is 70% cashmere and 30% silk, $235 for 70 × 210 cm.
Silk is a winter layer, not the warm one. Textile research puts 60% to 90% of a woven fabric’s volume down to air, and the still air is what insulates, so a silk scarf warms you in proportion to how much silk there is and how closely it sits. In one study, woven fabrics with wool measured warmer than the silk versions. So we judged every scarf by its size, weave and weight, not by the word “winter”.
We read 40 scarves on their makers’ own pages on 19 October 2026: 31 pure silk and 9 silk blends, from 24 makers. Only 6 of the 31 silk pages state a weight in momme, and of 19 long scarves, 2 do.
Only 6 of 31 silk scarves state their weight. Without it, you can’t tell how much silk you’re buying.
The short answer
The Kanso Collective sells Aubrey Kurlansky’s scarves, and he is one of its co-founders. We’ve listed his long scarf where our ranking puts it, and every other price and detail is from the maker’s own page, checked 19 October 2026.

“Silk, about” is our arithmetic from the page’s size and momme (momme × 4.34 g per square metre), except Aubrey Kurlansky’s, which we weighed (92 g, with its hems); ”–” means the page doesn’t give a weight, or we haven’t listed a price for that country (some of these stores also show converted prices at checkout). Sizes given in inches are converted by us. SILKSILKY’s long shawl was on sale at $39.95 (£32.95) when we checked.
Is a silk scarf warm enough for winter?
As a layer, yes. As your only scarf in freezing wind, no. Silk keeps you warm the way any fabric does, by holding still air next to your skin, and how much it holds depends on how much fabric there is.
Three findings from textile research decide it:
- The air does the work. A 2023 paper in Materials gives “the percentage of air in woven textile materials” as “60% to 90%”, and notes that “the thermal conductivity of fibres is 5–20 times higher than that of air”. The same paper says “multiple small air spaces between the layers” insulate better than one large gap. A scarf wrapped twice makes two layers; applying the paper to scarves is our step, not the authors’.
- Thickness first, then how much air gets through. A 2025 study in the International Journal of Biometeorology notes that thickness was long accepted as “by far the most important parameter” for insulation, that other studies have found air permeability “of similar importance”, and that wind “will penetrate the microclimate via the pores of the fabric”. That’s why a sheer silk does less outdoors than a heavier, closely woven one. The fabrics in its wind test weren’t silk, so it shows the principle, not a silk test.
- Wool measured warmer. A 2021 study of woven fabrics found “wool fabrics exhibit highest thermal resistance”, with eri silk, mulberry silk and linen lower. We read the abstract only; the fabrics had a polyester warp, and their thickness isn’t given.
What doesn’t hold up is the idea that silk is warm because it conducts little heat. Protein films like silk conduct on the order of “0.1 W/m·K”, according to a 2019 review in Polymers, several times more than air. Nor did we find a primary source for “silk regulates temperature”: silk’s standard moisture regain is 11%, below wool’s 13.6%.
People who wear it agree, in their own words. “I often wear a silk scarf under a wool or cashmere scarf, just for extra warmth,” one wrote on PurseForum. Another, on Styleforum, put the rule in six words: “Silk for cool weather, cashmere for cold weather.” (Forum posts are anecdotes, not data.)
How much silk is in a silk scarf?
Multiply the area by the weight. Momme is a weight per area, about 4.34 grams per square metre for each momme (the figure in the QUDT unit registry; the Chinese silk trade uses 4.3056). Our guide to silk twill and momme explains the unit.
| Scarf | Size (cm) | Momme | Area (m²) | Silk, about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NOCHKA 43-inch square | 109 × 109 | 19 | 1.19 | 98 g |
| Aubrey Kurlansky long scarf | 65 × 180 | 18 | 1.17 | 91 g (92 g weighed) |
| Silver & Riley 90 | 90 × 90 | 17.5 | 0.81 | 62 g |
| Echo New York The Botanists | 89 × 89 | 16 | 0.79 | 55 g |
| Tang Heritage Spring Window | 86 × 86 | 16 | 0.74 | 51 g |
| Soho Scarves Chiswick | 32 × 180 | 16 | 0.58 | 40 g |
Those six are every silk scarf in our 31 whose page gives a weight. The other 25 give a size, and 21 of all 31 name a weave, but you can’t work out how much silk you’re getting. Among long scarves it’s starker: of the 18 from other makers, only Soho Scarves ($169, £135) states one. Only 3 of those 18 pages mention cold or warmth at all; Lost Pattern suggests you “wrap it underneath a jacket on a cold day”.
Momme isn’t thickness. Dharma Trading, a US silk supplier, says a higher momme silk “will not necessarily be thicker” but “will be a heavier and denser material”. For winter that’s still the number to ask for: more silk in the same area.
Long silk scarf or 90 cm square for winter?
For winter with a coat, a long scarf. It has more silk, and it’s long enough to wrap twice. A 90 cm square is 0.81 m²; folded corner to corner, it makes a band about 127 cm long, which goes once round the neck with short ends. A 65 × 180 cm long scarf is 1.17 m², 44% more fabric, and a 70 × 200 cm one is 1.40 m², 73% more. The ways to tie a square all work under an open collar, but a long scarf is the one that fills the gap between a coat and your neck.
There’s one exception. A square of 135 to 140 cm, like Liberty’s Peacock Hall, is 1.96 m², more than two 90 cm squares, and folds into a triangle you can wear as a shawl under a coat.
Heavier silk or chiffon?
Heavier, closely woven silk. Chiffon is sheer and light: suppliers list it at 4 to 10 momme, against 14 to 18 for the twill in scarves and 12 to 22 for charmeuse. Dharma Trading calls silk “under 20 momme” lightweight, “generally used for summer weight scarves”, and 20 to 28 momme “excellent for warmer silk scarves”.
| Silk | Typical momme | A 70 × 200 cm scarf would hold |
|---|---|---|
| Chiffon | 4–10 (Threads, Dharma Trading, Dreamsilken) | about 49 g at 8 momme |
| Georgette | 10 (East & Silk) | about 61 g |
| Crepe de chine | 16 (Dharma Trading) | about 97 g |
| Twill, in scarves | 14–18 (Elle Silk; the twill pages above) | about 109 g at 18 momme |
| Charmeuse | 12–22 (Dharma Trading) | about 115 g at 19 momme |
The grams are our arithmetic for one size, to compare the weights; few scarves come in every weave. Keep the comparison to heavier silk against sheer silk: at the same thread count, a twill weave isn’t more windproof than a plain one, and chiffon is open because its yarns are fine and loosely set.
The best long silk scarves for winter
Echo New York, Snow Leopard Silk Wrap: the best for most people
Echo’s Snow Leopard wrap is $149 for 27 × 72 inches (69 × 183 cm) of 100% silk twill, wide enough to fold in half lengthways and still wrap twice. Dry clean. Echo offers free returns on full-price items. The page doesn’t give a weight or say how the hem is finished.
Who it suits: anyone who wants one large silk wrap for under a coat and around the house, at under $150.
Liberty London, Hera Long: 2 metres of crepe de chine
Liberty’s Hera long scarf is 70 × 200 cm of 100% silk crepe de chine, $350 in the US and £250 in the UK, with 30 days to return it from delivery. With Shaku’s Daisy Blush, it’s the largest pure-silk long scarf among our picks. The page doesn’t give a weight.
Who it suits: someone who wants a print they’ll know and the full 2 metres.
Shaku, Daisy Blush: the UK pick
Shaku sells its Daisy Blush scarf at £110 for 70 × 200 cm of “100% organic silk” twill, made in Como, dry clean only, with free UK returns within 14 days. In the US it’s $165, with free shipping. For a plainer scarf, Shaku’s Pure Black jacquard is the same size, woven rather than printed, at £180.
Who it suits: a UK buyer who wants a full-size twill scarf under £150.
Elizabetta, Elisa: a classic, narrower
Elizabetta’s Elisa is $140 (£125) for 50 × 188 cm (20 × 74 inches) of silk twill, “Made along the shores of Lake Como”. Dry clean only. At 50 cm wide it’s slimmer than the three above, so it knots neatly under a collar but covers less.
Who it suits: a long scarf to knot at the neck rather than wrap.
Aubrey Kurlansky, long silk scarf: an artist’s design, with its weight stated
Aubrey Kurlansky’s long scarves are 65 × 180 cm (one design, Flowers Radiate Joy, is a smaller 50 × 150 cm) of 18 momme silk twill, at $255 (£199). He’s a Bangkok artist who spent years designing interiors for luxury hotels in Singapore and Bangkok; every design starts as his own artwork, and The Kanso Collective sells his work. A 65 × 180 cm one weighs about 92 g (we weighed one), the most silk of the two long scarves on our list whose pages give a weight.
Every one of the 26 designs, among them The Laocoon (65 × 180 cm) and the smaller Flowers Radiate Joy (50 × 150 cm), is a limited edition, never mass produced: made to order in collaboration with the artist and finished by hand, then delivered in 2 to 3 weeks. Tracked shipping to the US is $30 an order, and returns are within 14 days of delivery, unworn. Dry clean only.
Who it suits: someone who wants a long twill scarf with its weight in writing and an artist’s print, and can wait a few weeks. Not the pick if you need it within a week.
SILKSILKY, Long Shawl: under $100
SILKSILKY’s long shawl is 53 × 170 cm of mulberry silk charmeuse, $79.95 (£65.95), and was $39.95 (£32.95) on sale when we checked. Its care label says “Hand wash recommended”. Returns: “365-Day Guarantee”, except clearance items.
Who it suits: a first silk winter layer, or a spare to keep at the office.
The best large silk squares for winter
A square suits a neat knot at the throat, inside a coat that buttons up. For winter, go big or go heavy.
- Liberty London, Peacock Hall 140, $370 (£265): a 140 cm square of 100% silk, made in Italy, dry clean only. The biggest square on our list. St. Piece’s Ava is 135 cm, made in England, at $429 (£315), and its page says it “can be styled as a statement shawl or a classic wrap”.
- NOCHKA, 43-inch square, $69.99: 109 cm of 19 momme mulberry silk charmeuse, handmade in the USA. At about 98 g of silk, it holds the most of any scarf on our list whose page gives a weight.
- Silver & Riley, Sunday in Saint-Germain, $275: 90 cm of 17.5 momme silk twill, hand-rolled in Como. The heaviest 90 cm twill square we found with its weight stated.
- Echo New York, The Botanists, $179: 89 cm (35 in) of 16 momme silk twill, hand-rolled, in Black, Fig or Bottle Green. Echo says the prints follow New York’s parks “from early fall to winter”.
If you’d rather have a print you’ll know, Liberty’s Hera 90 is $340 (£245) and Sabina Savage’s Wolf You Feed twill square is $415 (£275), made in England. Neither page gives a weight. Our luxury silk scarf price index compares 90 cm squares by price per square metre.
When you need real warmth: silk-wool and silk-cashmere
If the scarf is your only layer outdoors, buy a blend. The wool or cashmere does the insulating, and the silk adds sheen and softness. Check the silk percentage: it ran from 10% to 49% on the nine blends we read.
- Louis Jane, Berica Breeze, $235: 70% cashmere and 30% silk, 70 × 210 cm, made in Como. Louis Jane says it’s made “to keep you warm and snug at all times”. Our pick for warmth.
- Liberty London, Peacock Garden, $385 (£275): 51% wool and 49% silk, 70 × 200 cm, made in Italy. The most silk of any blend we found. For a big square, Liberty’s Strawberry Thief is 140 cm of cashmere-silk at $590 (£425).
- Quince, Featherweight Cashmere Silk, $64: 60% cashmere and 40% silk, 28 × 78 inches, with frayed edges. Quince calls it “airy and barely there while still offering gentle warmth”. Its care label allows a gentle hand wash.
- Alie Street London, Amara, $105 (£69): a 95 cm square of 90% wool and 10% silk. Dry clean only. Mostly wool, so it’s warm, with little silk.
Also checked: Elizabetta’s Vaso Fiorito (86% wool, 14% silk, $180), Jessie Zhao’s Day Jungle Reverie (85% wool, 15% silk, $145), Maneesha Ruia’s Calliope (80% wool, 20% silk, $330) and Sabina Savage’s 135 cm wool-silk shawl (70% wool, 30% silk, $600, £395).
How to wear a silk scarf in winter
- Under the collar, against your neck. That’s where it holds warm air and keeps wind from getting down the collar. Tie a square in a knot that sits high; wrap a long scarf twice.
- Under wool, not instead of it. In real cold, put a wool or cashmere scarf over the silk. The silk is the layer you keep on indoors.
- Open, over a sweater, indoors. A long scarf or a big square worn open over the shoulders is the layer for a cold office.
- Follow the care label. Most silk scarves on our list are dry clean only, ours included; SILKSILKY and Soho Scarves say hand wash. Follow the label.
Common claims about silk scarves in winter, checked
- A weight the sources don’t give. You may read a recommendation for “19 momme silk twill”, with “16–19 momme” as the range “for cooler weather”. Two silk makers’ guides point heavier: Carina Silk puts “cooler-season” silk at “About 20–22+ momme”, and Dreamsilken lists “19 – 25 mm” for “cooler weather”.
- Temperature bands with no source. You may read that silk is “Usually not warm enough on its own” below 32°F, with bands for 45–60°F and 30–45°F. We found no study behind them.
- “Without overheating.” You may read that mulberry silk “traps a small pocket of warm air near your skin without causing overheating indoors”. We found no source for the claim.
- The wrong reason. You may read that silk warms you through low thermal conductivity. Silk protein conducts about 0.1 W/m·K, several times more than air; the trapped air is what insulates.
- A price that’s changed. You may read that Alie Street’s Amara silk-wool scarf costs $130. Alie Street’s own US store showed $105 when we checked.
What we’d do
For one silk scarf to wear all winter: a long one, at least 65 cm wide, in twill or crepe de chine. Echo’s Snow Leopard wrap at $149 in the US, Shaku’s Daisy Blush at £110 in the UK, or Liberty’s Hera long in crepe de chine at $350 (£250). For a square, a big one: NOCHKA’s 19 momme 43-inch at $69.99 holds the most silk of any scarf on our list whose page gives a weight. Wear it under the coat collar, and when it’s properly cold, put Louis Jane’s cashmere and silk scarf or another wool over it. Before you buy any silk scarf for winter, look for two numbers on the page: the size and the momme.
FAQ
Are silk scarves good for winter? Yes, as a layer under a coat or a wool scarf. Silk insulates the way any fabric does, by holding still air, so a large, heavier silk scarf does more than a small or sheer one. For freezing, windy days, a wool or cashmere scarf, or a silk-wool or silk-cashmere blend, does the insulating.
Is silk warmer than wool? No. In a 2021 study of woven fabrics, the wool fabrics had the highest thermal resistance and the silk fabrics were lower, close to linen. Silk is lighter for its size, which is why many people wear it under a coat or under a wool scarf rather than instead of one.
Can I wear a silk scarf in winter? Yes. Wear it high under the coat collar, wrapped twice if it’s long, so it holds warm air at your neck and keeps wind out of the collar. In real cold, add a wool or cashmere scarf on top.
What momme silk is best for a winter scarf? Heavier is better: more momme means more silk in the same area. Makers suggest 18 momme and up for autumn and winter, and 19 to 25 momme for shawls and wraps. Only 6 of the 31 silk scarves we checked state a weight, so ask the seller if the page doesn’t say.
Is a long silk scarf or a 90 cm square better for winter? A long scarf. At 65 × 180 cm it has 44% more fabric than a 90 cm square, and at 70 × 200 cm, 73% more, and it’s long enough to wrap twice. The exception is a square of 135 cm or more, worn as a shawl.
Is silk twill warmer than silk chiffon? A heavier silk holds more air than a sheer one, and chiffon is the lightest silk sold for scarves, at 4 to 10 momme against 14 to 18 for twill scarves. So yes: an 18 momme twill scarf holds more than twice the silk of an 8 momme chiffon one the same size. Nobody we found has measured silk twill against chiffon for warmth.
What is the warmest silk scarf? A silk-cashmere or silk-wool blend, because the cashmere or wool does the insulating. Among pure silk, the warmest is the one with the most silk: large and heavy. NOCHKA’s 109 cm, 19 momme square holds about 98 g of silk, the most of any scarf we checked whose page gives a weight.
How much does a good silk scarf for winter cost? On the makers’ own sites on 19 October 2026, long silk scarves on our list cost $59.90 to $350 (£39.99 to £250), squares $50 to $429, and silk blends $64 to $600. Our six long-scarf picks sold in the US cost $79.95 to $350.
