What makes a great silk scarf design
A good scarf design works flat, folded and tied. A few things the best ones have in common:
A square composition
Design for the square first. Balance the four corners and let the eye travel around the whole piece, rather than putting everything in one spot.
A centre and a border
Many classic scarf designs pair a strong centre with a frame around it. The border is what shows when the scarf is folded into a triangle or knotted at the neck.
Symmetry
Mirror into four reflects one image into the four quarters around the centre, the traditional way to turn a single motif into a whole square. Move the top-left copy and the others follow.
Key details inside the hem
The edge of a silk scarf is rolled into a fine hem, so keep faces, names and signatures at least 1.5 cm in from the edge. Turn on Show guides to see the line.
Image resolution
Aim for 150 dpi at the size you choose. On a 90 cm scarf that's about 5,300 pixels across. The sharpness check shows each image's resolution as you scale it.
Colour on silk
Silk has a soft lustre that deepens rich colours and quietens pale ones. Strong contrast reads beautifully; very pale tints close to the background colour can fade away.
